And this is Al, the best cat ever

Al, may she rest in peace, thought she was a dog. She came when called, waited for me at the top of the stairs, followed people who were in the house wherever they went. She was a stray, found outside Rushville, Missouri. She moved with me to Kansas City, then to Delaware, then to St. Louis. She lived two decades, and was a sweetheart always.

This is Joe, the best dog ever

Joe, may he rest in peace, was the sweetest dog ever. He was found wandering the streets of Kansas City and the people who found him put his picture up on the bulletin board at work. He was probably six months old when we adopted him, and lived 14 more years. I gave him insulin twice a day for the last 42 months of his life. (His name was Darwin when we adopted him, but we knew immediately that the name didn't fit his personality.)

Up the Yangtze

The full WEIRD SANTA seal of approval.

We saw "Up the Yangtze" this afternoon at one of my favorite theaters, the Tivoli, in the Loop in University City. Dan was ambivalent, but I absolutely loved the movie. I was deeply moved by the depiction of poverty in rural China set against the government might that will result in the Three Gorges Dam. It was one of those movies that sent me to the web to learn more as soon as I got home.

Jill Fredel puts up a post

My friend Jill Fredel posted a quote I had been searching for from the Talleyville vet clinic near Wilmington, Delaware. It's where Al and Joe were cared for when we lived in Wilmington. The post was published July 13, 2008.

Jaimie joins the family

In the first photo, Jaimie stands with her grandmother-in-law at the wedding reception in Kansas City right after Thanksgiving 2006. Below, Bruce's brain takes over Mom's body in the Kansas version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Why don't Sean and Benjamin look horrified?
